There’s no denying that a whole lot of American history has its roots right here in the greater Charleston area. That’s why it was such good news to see that the McLeod Plantation development is underway with a goal of having the nearly 37-acre park opened to the public by spring of 2015. Located on James Island, the plantation dates back more than 300 years to 1695, playing roles in both the Revolutionary and Civil wars. The property has changed hands several times through the centuries, but is now in the capable hands of the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission, ensuring that this historically significant property – including buildings dating back to the 18th century – will be maintained and protected under public ownership.
